COLLECTION PROJECT

Over the last few years the Morley Gallery has run a major project to document and organise the Morley College Permanent Art Collection, supported by volunteer Beatrice Bosco and in association with Kings College London. This project has for the first time conducted a full photographic survey of the collection, standardised documentation and cataloguing practices, and registered recently acquired artworks, bringing the College collection inline with the Accreditation standard.

Since 2020 the Art Collection has expanded with the donation of works by Alan Thornhill, Frank Connelly, Tadek Beutlich, Patricia Leigh, Maggi Hambling and Zsuzsi Roboz among others, significantly expanding its holdings of late twentieth century and early twenty first century British art.

This project is focused on the development of a professional standard collection database, a prototype of which can be accessed publicly here:

This is still a work in progress, with much documentation still to be incorporated and areas to be tidied, but it presents, for the first time, a coherent look at the Morley College Permanent Art Collection and the history it embodies.

This project is an important step on the development of collection management policy and procedure, working towards our Arts Council Accreditation application.

Did you know…

that Morley has an art collection on permanent display? This includes works by Edward Bawden, John Piper, Bridget Riley, Maggi Hambling and Denzil Forrester. We also have regular exhibitions in the Morley Gallery and other spaces across our centres, which aim to support the creative development of artists. Our displays, exhibitions and art collection are publicly accessible and can be visited during college opening hours.
