THE FOYER

OUT OF THE WOOD

13 January - 1 February 2025

This exhibition showcases recent Japanese Woodcuts Mokuhanga made by Morley Advanced class with tutor Carol Wilhide Justin.

The prints ally the nuance of watercolour with the certainties of a cut woodblock. The wood used is shina plywood and the tools are traditional Japanese tools such as the hangi-tō. Watercolour pigments are brushed into the wood using a te bake and the image is transferred to the printing paper by hand pressure with a baren. The paper is handmade Washi paper.

Entirely non-toxic, handmade from start to finish, and with surprisingly diverse effects, it’s easy to see why this wonderful technique is undergoing a revival today.
